Anthropic cancels the Claude Sonnet 5 price rise that was due on 1 September
Anthropic withdrew a scheduled September price increase for Claude Sonnet 5, leaving its introductory $2 input and $10 output rates as the model's standard API prices.
What happened
Published here
Anthropic's pricing page carried an introductory price for Claude Sonnet 5 of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with a rise to $3 and $15 scheduled for 1 September 2026. The page now says the introductory figures are the standard price and that the increase "will not occur". We read the page on 5 September 2026 and recorded $2 and $10 as the standard price for the model, with cache writes at $2.50 for the five minute window and $4.00 for the hour. What it means for you
A price rise that is announced and then cancelled leaves no trace on a pricing page, which is exactly why it belongs in a log. If you costed a project on the increase that was scheduled, the model is a third cheaper on input and a third cheaper on output than the plan you built, and nothing will arrive to tell you so. It also sets the baseline for the next move: our Anthropic table now records $2 and $10 as a standard price rather than an introduction, so a future change has a dated figure to be measured against instead of arriving as a number with no past.
In more detail
The cancelled rise matters more than a cancelled rise usually would, because of where Sonnet 5 sits. It is the middle of Anthropic’s range: cheaper than the flagship, dearer than the small models, and the one most people reach for when they want good work at a price they can defend. Moving it from $2 to $3 would have put it within touching distance of the tier above and changed which model a reasonable person picks.
There is a second reading here, about how pricing pages behave. A scheduled rise is published as a promise and withdrawn as an edit. The page that carried the schedule now carries the standard price, and no version of it says a rise was ever planned. Anyone who read the page in August and costed a year of work on the higher figure has no way to discover from the page itself that the figure is wrong. That gap is the reason this site keeps dated rows.
