OpenAI announces GPT-6 Astra and puts it on the Plus allowance table
OpenAI has put GPT-6 Astra on the paid ChatGPT rungs at 5 to 45 local messages on Plus, the tightest allowance of any model on its own docs pricing list.
What happened
Published here
On 3 September 2026 OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, describing it as a new frontier model with state of the art capabilities in computer use, coding, cybersecurity and scientific domains. A safety overview published the same day records that the model reaches critical cybersecurity capability levels under OpenAI's own preparedness framework, which the company presents as a first for its public safety reporting. Diagram of the GPT-6 Astra allowance on three ChatGPT rungs, each published range drawn as a span along an axis of local messages per five-hour period running from zero to 900. ChatGPT Plus at twenty dollars a month is a narrow span from 5 to 45, Pro at one hundred dollars runs 25 to 225, and the tier above at two hundred dollars runs 100 to 900 across most of the axis. A note says Astra is listed for the paid tiers only, and a panel beneath reads one span across, with long tasks at the bottom end and short messages at the top.
The numbers
GPT-6 Astra on Plus
5 to 45
Local messages per five-hour period, and which end you get depends on the task.
Plus, per month
$20
The tier the allowance table above is written for.
Pro, from
$100
Five times the Plus price for the wider range beside it.
The same model on Pro
25 to 225
And 100 to 900 on the tier above that, so the spread is the product.

Tracked on this site: our ChatGPT plans and limits table
What it means for you
You do not need a new plan to try it, but Plus buys less of Astra than of any other model on that page. OpenAI's docs pricing page lists GPT-6 Astra on ChatGPT Plus at 5 to 45 local messages per five hour period, the lowest allowance in that column at both ends, while every other model listed there starts at 10 or above. The Pro tiers, at $100 and $200 a month, are listed at 25 to 225 and 100 to 900 on the same basis. The spread inside each range is real: OpenAI says simple prompts may take only a fraction of an allowance while large projects and long sessions take significantly more per message. It also says these are estimates rather than fixed limits, and that prompt length alone is not a reliable guide, naming model choice, context, reasoning, tool use, retrieval and caching as the other things that move the number. Our ChatGPT plans table carries the full allowance list with the date it was read.
