What it means for you

A funding round does not move an invoice. What a Mistral buyer pays is still the published per-token rate, and our price table reads Mistral Large 3 at $0.50 per million input tokens against $1.50 output, with Ministral 3 (3B) at $0.10 each way, so this round is a signal about how long those rates and the open weights stay available rather than a change to any bill.

In more detail

Mistral said on 8 September 2026 that it has closed a Series D of €3 billion at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, which the company calls the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led it, with the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and the existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. The announcement is dated three years after the company’s launch.

The stated use of the money runs in order: frontier research, then compute capacity for training powerful models, then infrastructure, commercial growth and international footprint. Mistral describes its own position as the sovereign AI layer, built from open-weight models, the infrastructure they run on, and the products that put them into production, and says that shape keeps customers off a single vendor’s roadmap, pricing or availability.

The numbers

The raise is €3 billion and the post-money valuation is more than €21 billion. Mistral says it operates across 20 countries and supports 125+ global enterprises, naming Airbus, ASML and HSBC. Its Series C was led by ASML and this round by Samsung Electronics, both of them industrial and advanced manufacturing companies rather than pure software investors. Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg join as new investors, alongside returning backers including a16z, Bpifrance, DST Global, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, NVIDIA and Salesforce Ventures.

What it does not change

Nothing in the announcement is a price move. Our Mistral price table, verified on 5 September 2026, still reads Mistral Large 3 at $0.50 per million input tokens and $1.50 output, Mistral Medium 3.5 at $1.50 and $7.50, Mistral Small 4 at $0.15 and $0.60, Codestral at $0.30 and $0.90, Ministral 3 (8B) at $0.15 each way and Ministral 3 (3B) at $0.10 each way. Context is 256k tokens on each of those except Codestral, which publishes 128k. Cached input is printed as a rule rather than a rate, minus 90% on input tokens, with no per-model figure on the page.

For a buyer the round moves the risk side of the ledger rather than the cost side. A model you can download and run yourself is only as durable as the company that keeps publishing the weights, and €3 billion of funding plus industrial backers is the case Mistral is making about that durability. Note the currency mismatch while you read it: the raise is in euros, the API page quotes dollars, so a European team paying by the token still carries an exchange rate that the funding currency does nothing to settle.
