On October 20, 2026, Google said Gemini's Personal Intelligence feature is rolling out globally to cars, starting with Android Auto and arriving on cars with Google built-in in the coming months, letting the assistant read a driver's connected Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search data to answer spoken questions without the driver touching a phone. What it means for you
For a driver, this turns a navigation assistant into a data-linked one, so declining Personal Intelligence keeps the car's voice controls working but the assistant stops drawing on personal messages, calendar entries or saved photos, a choice now made once in the Gemini settings rather than feature by feature as Google adds more connected apps over time.
In more detail
Google announced on October 20, 2026, that Gemini’s Personal Intelligence capability is moving into cars, starting with Android Auto and extending to vehicles with Google built-in over the coming months. The feature lets Gemini connect, with a driver’s permission, to Workspace apps including Gmail and Google Calendar, plus Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Once connected, a driver can ask compound questions out loud, such as checking a flight gate and whether the flight is delayed, without opening a confirmation email or running a separate search.
The company frames the addition as a way to make a voice assistant more useful specifically in a setting where typing or scrolling is unsafe. Examples Google gave include finding a restaurant along a route that matches a driver’s known preferences, navigating to an appointment without recalling the address, or locating a place seen in an earlier photo and routing there. Each of these tasks previously meant pulling over or handing the phone to a passenger.
Access depends on explicit opt-in. Apps stay disconnected until a driver turns the feature on in Gemini’s settings, and cars with Google built-in only surface personalized answers when the driver’s phone is connected inside the vehicle. Turning the feature off does not disable the car’s other Gemini functions: navigation, music and plain questions keep working, just without answers tailored to the driver’s own data.
The numbers
Personal Intelligence is rolling out to personal Google accounts for users aged 18 and older, and is not available to Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts. The rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Nigeria, a narrower list than Gemini’s usual regional restrictions and one that leaves several major markets waiting for a later phase. Android Auto users get the feature first, with cars built around Google’s in-car software following in the coming months rather than at the same time, so the in-dash experience will lag the phone-projected one for some period.
The approach mirrors how Google has handled other Gemini capabilities this year: a feature ships to a subset of surfaces and regions first, with the remaining rollout timed loosely rather than dated, leaving drivers in excluded markets to track Google’s own settings page rather than a published schedule for when access arrives.
